Toffees book trip to Wembley

By: 21 | March 8th, 2009

Everton booked its trip to Wembley for the semi-finals of the FA Cup against Manchester United with a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough. Gareth Southgate’s side were far from pushovers and were clearly the aggressor from the start. After a cagey start to the match, Boro took the lead just before the break as Matthew Bates cross was headed in by the much maligned David Wheater for a shock 1-0 lead at Goodison. At the break Louis Saha came in for Jack Rodwell, allowing Timmy Cahill to move back towards his more comfortable place in the midfield. The impact was immediate as five minutes into the new half your favourite Aussie, Timmy Cahill sent a long cross that Marouane Fellaini (your favourite Belgian) headed in and the match was even. Six minutes later Steven Pienaar (your favourite South African) was nodded in by Louis Saha (ok, I’ve got lots of French friends so I don’t want to start anything here) to give the Toffees the lead. Everton had a few chances to extend the lead but nonetheless they were able to hold off a determined Middlesbrough to win 2-1.
