Timmy Cahill equals Dixie Dean’s record
By: 21 | January 20th, 2009
As Timmy Cahill netted his late goal against at Anfield, he not only brought the match level and helped secure a important point for the Toffees and sent Liverpulian’s home broken-hearted as they lost important points in the championship race against Manchester United but he equally entered the Everton record books.
With the goal Timmy climbs into rare air as he has equaled the record of the legendary Dixie Dean, scoring three times at Anfield. Playing for Everton during the 1920’s / 30’s he found the net 349 times and quite obviously to be included in the same record books, it is an extraordinary honour.
Timmy Cahill, spoke respectfully of Liverpool, the record and of the goal:
“Has everyone started calling me Dixie? I don’t know about that – to be honest, I’m more concerned about what the goal meant for our team and supporters.
“You work so hard chasing after defenders and great players like Steven Gerrard and we take great pride from getting a point because Liverpool are a great team.
“They deserve to be top of the league. We deserved a point and Pepe Reina deserves a lot of credit as he made a couple of world class saves.
“I thought I’d scored in the first half with a header but the spring on him to get to it was ridiculous. But we got there in the end and I am really happy for our fans.
“I’m lucky to have scored at Anfield three times now but I didn’t want to get anyone in trouble by celebrating too much. I just wanted to see if we could score another.
“I didn’t want to show any disrespect to Liverpool whatsoever.
“You get your rewards by working hard and keeping going. Our fans should enjoy this moment but so should Liverpool’s – it was a draw and both sides deserved the point.
“We’ll come back here on Sunday and we’ll prepare the same way. We’ll do what we think is right and we’ll try to put right any mistakes we think we made.”
