The worst possible start

By: John | August 18th, 2009

It had to happen. No new signings to speak of (apart from some unknowns who will probably spend the season in the reserves), first game of the season against an Arsenal team with a need to shut a few people up and the Joleon Lescott affair on everyones mind.

We simply weren’t good enough, the defending diabolical and no presence upfront. The only “positive” for me personally is that we didn’t play badly enough to lose 6-1.

I’ll admit I’m not looking forward to facing Sigma Olomouc on Thursday. Hopefully though, the annihilation on Saturday will serve as a massive kick up the backside.

If we can get some new players in by the end of the week coupled by a good performance on Thursday then that will give everyone a lift.

I’ll finish with a message for Moyes: Get rid of Lescott! He wants to leave so take the £20 million and run!

It could be a long nine months for Everton fans who think they can improve on or even maintain last season’s fifth place finish. Moyes has done a fantastic job to mix it with teams with a far greater budget for playing staff but I don’t think his squad is deep enough to compete with the likes of Villa, Man City and Spurs this season let alone the big four. While I wish Moyes and Everton all the best and look forward to seeing Gosling and Rodwell develop the Scot’s policy of steady squad building is a non starter when chasing honours in this cash rich age of football.

Seems that you are spending Lescott-money wisely: this Russian guy, Bilyaletdinov, is talented and creative midfielder (may be lack of stamina though).

Please help stop Accrington Stanley from going into administration. They need to raise 308k in 8 weeks. Please donate 1p to the whole 308k at http://www.saveourstanley.co.uk. No-one likes to see a club go under.
