Standard Liège visit Liverpools favourite club
By: 21 | September 17th, 2008Standard Liège visit Goodison Park later today in Everton’s opening UEFA Cup match. The Belgium champions came within a whisper of defeating the other team in Liverpool during the Champions League qualifiers and will be quite a handful in all facets of the game.
The Toffees come in the match a bit battered with Tony Hibbert, Andy van der Meyde, Steven Pienaar, Joseph Yobo and Louis Saha out with injuries and new arrival Marouane Fellaini is cup-tied after playing in the qualifiers for Standard Liège. There is some commentary that Leon Osman could be available but that decision won’t come to a pre-match fitness test.
The Belgiums are likely to play a 4-4-2 in the away match but can easily move to a 4-3-3 and therefore I expect the following lineup:
Rorys Aragon
Oguchi Onyewu,Bonfim Dante,Tomislav Mikulic/Adama Sarr, Marcos Camozzato
Wilfred Dalmat, Steven Defour,Axel Witsel,Igor De Camargo
Milan Jovanovic, Deiudonne Mbokani
Through the start of the Jupiler League they showed not only a fluid passing attack but were well organized in the defense so David Moyes will need to be tactically patient. They are an interesting combination of attacking zeal and defensive organization which in many ways reflects their managers László Bölöni rich history in Romanian Football and in youth development throughout all of Football.
Drop-by, chat-up the comments and tell me why The Toffees are Liverpool’s and your favourite team while I watch the match.

I support Everton because I prefer to have a rooting interest in the leagues I watch… My pros run something like this in no particular order: Moyes was a Bhoy; I’ve read that Toffee was/is a slang term for Irishman; I don’t care for the big 4; and Everton has a tradition such that I wouldn’t think they’d be relegated (and then it’d really be hard to watch them from the states – I don’t think I can find the Standard Liege game which is sad because it sounds like it has been a great one).

I forgot to mention the obvious one for a Yank and that’s Tim Howard…and Everton won the only time I got to see them in person.
