proud and honoured
By: 21 | January 24th, 2009There is no disputing Timmy Cahill’s impact with Everton since arriving from Millwall in 2004. With each year his talents emerge and his season he has raised the bar as he has been pressed into duty as a striker. With his recent goal against Liverpool he tied Toffee-great Dixie Dean record for most goals at Anfield.
Showing humility, the Aussie international said:
“At the time I didn’t know anything about it. I’m fortunate enough to have scored four goals in the derby but to equal Dixie Dean’s record [for scoring at Anfield]… I’m very proud and honoured to be in the same sentence as him, let alone [sharing] the same record.
“Ian Rush scored 25 goals in the derby and then he said games like that are what make you a legend. Hopefully one day I can be an Everton legend.
“I’m always looking to score and play well for the team first but now that you’ve got a record like this ahead of you a goal would be great, and it would be great to break the record.
“There will be no change of mentality. I think we go there on a high, there’s no pressure on us, we’re playing away from home, playing in a very awkward atmosphere. We’ll be taking 6,000 plus and the fans could probably make it like a home game.
“I just think we’ll take it all in the same way we have every other game. The FA Cup is such a big competition, I’ve had good experiences with it and I feel that it’s really important that we go on a run.
“Winning games is breeding confidence and the fans should think that we’re going to win, because we think the same. I think the best thing about this group of boys is that they leave everything on the pitch.
“At the start of the season it was a bit messy, we were getting used to new signings, getting used to each other and things like that, but it’s all started to gel. I said at the start of the season we could only get stronger and this is what’s happened now.”
