I think Jô likes it in Everton
By: 21 | February 7th, 2009
I think it’s safe to say, Jô likes it in Everton. Away from the madness of Man City where the Brazilian striker was taking root on Mark Hughes bench, Jô stepped up in his first match and delivered two goals for the Toffees in route to a 3-0 victory over Bolton. With the talented striker in the lineup, Timmy Cahill was pulled back to his better suited position, forming a promising trio with teen phenom Dan Gosling.
Without Steven Pienaar and Marouane Fellaini in the lineup due to injuries, Everton went on the attack immediately but following a poor close range miss by our favourite Aussie Timmy Cahill and a number of strong chances the match was without a score until the final moments of the first half. However five minutes before the break Gretar Steinsson felled Jô in the area and with the spot pointed to, Mikel Arteta converted giving the Toffees the one goal advantage.
After the break the wasted one at City, Jô scored as he collected a long pass from Phil Neville and turned before volleyed the ball into the net in what looked as easy as a practice ground exercise. Everton had a number of other opportunities to score but like those before, were squandered. Finally with the match coming to a comfy closing, Mark Davies was adjudged to handling the ball and with the spot pointed to Jô fired in his second of the afternoon.
Following the match David Moyes said of the new striker on Everton TV:
“Jo did really well.
“It was everything we hoped he would do. In training I wasn’t sure if he was ready and I wanted to bring him on a little bit slower because the players here have been playing well.
“Injury and suspension meant we didn’t have a choice and he hasn’t disappointed me or the supporters, that’s for sure.”
“The players have been great with him and they’ve made him really welcome.
“They have made coming to Everton easy for him.
“We’ve had a lot of big games so we will give the players a few days off and then get back on it.”

what a game! I’m happy that Jo did so well on his debut. Hopefully he can continue to perform for you guys, and just stay there instead of going back to moneybag city.

It is funny how he shows up in Everton and immediately produces.
Good luck tomorrow – win the derby!

He’s a good striker but needs the supporting cast to succeed. Man shitty is a joke, he’ll do well at Everton like we saw today, a few more performances like today’s and Moyes should think about getting his chequebook out of his pocket.

I cannot stop replaying the image in my head of Mark Hughes watchings this on MOTD and screaming ‘GODDAMNIT’ and kicking his dog.

Matt,
I get the feeling he’s counting his stacks of money instead, while Craig Bellamy silently suckles his balls.
If anything this performance just solidifies the idea that a player’s surroundings can vastly change his performance.
Maybe if Manshitty didn’t have enough money to buy the second coming Hughes might be a little upset.

Jo didn’t forget how to play. Now I wonder how he’d link up with Yak (though I don’t recall which striker is set to return first off the top of my head). After having to deal with several folks bagging on the FA Cup match for being dull, 3 goals and another clean sheet was just the remedy.
