Everton takes Sunderland apart 3-0

By: 21 | December 28th, 2008

Everton solidified its sixth place position in the table with an powerful 3-0 destruction of Sunderland at Goodison Park. Turning aside its problematic home record this year, David Moyes side controlled the match from start to finish and extend their unbeaten streak to four matches. While saddled with ongoing injuries, the Toffees have banded together and in many ways have grown through the tumultuous period. While Sunderland came out hot, testing Tim Howard early, the American ‘keeper was up to every challenge. Everton took the lead only ten minutes with Mikel Arteta’s perfectly placed free-kick and fortune seemed to be on his side as seventeen minutes later he was presented with a free-kick from nearly the same spot. This time his strike found the wall but he quickly dealt with the rebound and sent it into the net to bring the match to a 2-0 scoreline. While Everton could have increased the lead, the Black Cats showed little attacking creativity and only respectable attempt came past the hour mark but once again Tim Howard would have nothing of it as he extended his streak of four matches in a row without allowing a goal. The match took on a celebratory mood as eighteen year-old Dan Gosling slammed in final goal with seven minutes left only to be followed-up with Lukas Jutkiewicz debut on the senior squad, bathing Goodison in a sea of promise.

Saw it on delay here in the states. I think their playing with tremendous heart and drive right now and it’s really easy to get behind a team that’s giving it 100 percent every match.

The Hull match is going to be huge. A tough stretch starts right after and holding off the Tigers for 6th is big. I’d love to thing higher but with lack of funds to bolster the squad in January catching Arsenal or Villa is probably a bit too much to ask.
